An important part of any research project (or indeed life) is learning how to ask the right questions. For ROAM, we want to understand the perspectives of rural communities on climate and climate change. But to do this, we have to ask the right questions in a way that makes sense. The best way to do this is via a real life test run, so on 6 July 2023 we did exactly this.
Important things we wanted to find out: Did everyone understand the questions? Writing questions can be hard and it is important to get them right. People need to understand what you are asking before they give their answers. Test Verdict: Many of the questions are good but some need to change to be clearer. Do the questions provide good insights into perspectives on climate change? If we want to know what people think about climate and climate change, we need to ask the right questions. We want a broad picture of our participants' perspectives. But we should not ask hundreds of questions for fun. This means we need to concisely explore how people feel about and are acting on climate change. Test Verdict: Our questions gave us a broad picture but we need to ask a few more to address missing areas. Was 2 hours enough time to get through our questions? We thought 2 hours would be a good length of time for the focus groups. We hoped this would be enough time for everyone to share their answers but not too long that people get bored. We also wanted to include a small break in the middle for refreshments. Test Verdict: Two hours is enough time (just about!) but we need to pay attention to time. Did our interactive activity work? We created an interactive activity but had not tested it before. The activity provides a way to discuss different themes connected to climate change. We wanted to know if it was fun and if it would work Test Verdict: Everyone enjoyed the activity and it provided lots of interesting conversations. Overall we are very happy with how the focus groups went. We thank the folks who showed up to test it with us and shared all their helpful opinions. We are looking forward to doing the real thing very soon!
